Pat Madinger’s great uncle, Nicholas Carriger, led a wagon train from Missouri over the Sierra Nevada Mountains and arrived in the Sonoma Valley in 1846.
After naval service in the War with Mexico, a volunteer mission to rescue the survivors of the Donner Party, and several trips to the gold fields, he returned to Sonoma, "a beautiful little place handsomely shaded by tall trees," where he purchased land from General Vallejo for $16 in gold dust, built the first redwood house and fences, and was the first American to plant a vineyard there.
It is with Nicholas' spirit of discovery and adventure that we are proud to offer these personal choices selected in our travels for your enjoyment.
